Weaving Diaspora Through Design
Thesis Project

Weaving Diaspora Through Design is a project that explores identity and cultural heritage through the lens of a designer from the Vietnamese diaspora. By revisiting cannage—a traditional Vietnamese craft—the project becomes a way to explore my place as a Vietnamese born abroad. Inspired by the art of weaving natural fibers, it transforms cultural fragments into a contemporary design system. This project is both an archive and a typographic specimen. It brings together the voices of Vietnamese artists and designers, while presenting a typeface inspired by bamboo weaving, built on a modular system. Here, cannage serves as both the construction grid for the typeface and the visual framework for the publication, unifying everything in a single graphic gesture. Weaving Diaspora Through Design thus becomes a reflection of my hybrid identity.
